Cubao X

Cubao X

A blog post about a first-timer's experience at the treasure hunter's paradise that is Cubao X. From thrift shopping a wide range of antiques and curiosities, to sampling the edgy nightlife of this little hide space, Cubao X truly offers something for everyone.

As proverbial pirates would say, "X Marks the Spot".

Cubao X, a shortner name for "Cubao Expo", certainly does mark the spot for all would be treasure hunters and seekers of things otherwise classified as quirky and curious. This place has always been known as a haven for vintage collectors and art enthusiasts, perfect for what I had in mind.

This was actually my second visit to Cubao X since attending Dan Matutina's art exhibit (here). I decided to visit the place again when I set out to find an extra special Christmas gift for my dad. My father, as most people know him, loves collecting memories. He has whole collections of vintage things from groovy cars to postal stamps and old Coca-Cola merchandise to engraved ash trays. Cubao X was the right place to go for a unique gift for a special person.

During my trip there, I came to the conclusion that there must you must accomplish two things whenever you visit Cubao X. These are: (1) Window Shop and (2) Eat, Drink and be Merry. (Okay, okay, those are four things all together but who's counting?)

The first thing to do was...

1. Window Shop

Cubao X is home to a handful of vintage shops that carry a WIDE range of items. When I say wide, I do mean wide. Shops have items ranging from antique toy guns, to fine China dishes from the yester-years. They have things like German Iron Crosses (worth Php 30,000.00!) to handmade Italian mini-bikes. You'll also see stuff like all the old-fashioned bottles you can think of to ride-able bicycles from our grandparents days.

You'll definitely lose yourself among the shelves just looking and admiring all the curiosities found around the shops. I don't think one afternoon is even enough to examine each and every interesting piece around Cubao X.

If you're interested in buying an item, the great thing about this place is that you can haggle with the owners and they usually give you around 30-45% off maybe even 50-60% if you've got a silver tongue.

UVLA, Cubao X's Best Vintage Store (IMHO)

Most of the items pictured above can be found at the UVLA Store which means the Unique Vintage Lost Art Store. The store has one of the better collections among the shops around Cubao X. The owner is pretty nice too.

2. Eat, Drink and Be Merry

Second thing to do around Cubao X is to hit the different bars. Although usually quiet and sleepy in the afternoons (FYI, stores around Cubao X usually open late morning or early afternoon depending on the mood of the owners) Cuabo X usually experiences an influx of energy with the absence of the sun.

Evening transforms the place into a watering hole for denizens of the night who are usually composed of students from nearby colleges as well as the art community that calls Cubao X their stomping grounds.

There are cigar bars, burger bars, movie-showing bars, art bars, halo-halo bars and communist bars just waiting for someone to sample their wares. During my visit, the bar which caught my eye the most was the communist bar.

Fred's Revolucion - Bar

Fred's Revolucion is an extremely interesting bar filled with all the communist propaganda you could possibly think of. From the wall decorations, to the bullet-ridden bar counter, it just screams Marxist. Their menu is even patterned after unique commie things.

We didn't get to try their food but their liquor was reasonably priced and generously served so that was fine with us. The atmosphere around the bar is lively with rock music being blasted through the speakers. But it's chill enough to have a nice conversation with friends as the ceiling fans fan away. This is also a good place for people watching since the huge open doors draw people in like a kerosene lamps brings in the moths.

Bar chow can range from around Php 150 - 200 and beers go for around Php 50. Mixed Drinks range in the Php 60-80

Notes:

1. Cubao X may be a little hard to find at first since it is literally a hole in the wall which extends going inward. During my visit there, there was a huge over head sign that said 'Cubao Expo', so keep your eyes peeled.

2. Parking can get a bit tricky around the area. If you're early, you can enter the Cubao X and park at the side of one of the many shops around the vicinity.
